1.  Cover the cake in rolled fondant.
2.  Open the end of the roll of adding machine tape.
3.  Pull out the end of the tape and wrap it around the rolled fondant covered cake as shown in the picture to the left.
4.  Make a small cut or pencil mark on the tape where the ends meet.
5.  Cut the tape to the appropriate size of the circumference of the cake.
Note:  If you do this prior to the covering of the cake, the tape will be too short because the rolled fondant covering increases the circumference of the cake which is the distance around the outside of the cake (or circle).
1.  Fold the tape in half as shown in the picture to your left.
2.  Fold the tape the desired number of times.  (If your main item is to be placed in 8 evenly-spaced places around the side of the cake, fold the tape 3 times.)
3.  If you wish to have a curved design or designs in the side decorations of the cake, just cut the design at the top and or bottom of the completely folded tape.  A design or delicate border may be piped right onto the cake using the template with the curved design or designs that has been cut with the scissors.
1.  If you have cut a design such as a curve from the adding machine tape at the top and/or bottom, a pencil or hat pin may be used to draw or etch the design using the designed-cut tape as the guideline.  Piping would be used to pipe on top of the markings using the sized tips of choice.  Be sure not to have any of the mechanics (markings) show especially on show cakes as judges do look for this.
2.  Use a hat pin and prick lightly at each point of the folded piece of tape.
Hint:  Know exactly where the item or piped design will go to be sure that where the hat pin mark was made, it will be covered.  (If I am creating my popup flowers, I make sure that the hat pin mark will touch the outside of the exact point of the cutter in each of the placements where the crease of the tape is.)
1.  Choose one of the main pieces/designs that will be placed around the cake, and place it at each of the markings that was made on the fondant.  (See the parts of the bibs as shown in the picture to the left.
2.  Choose the next item such as the untinted flower as pictured and place one flower between each of the bibs.
3.  Choose the next item or design and place it between each flower and bib.
Note:  The flower is a popup flower and would be tinted after it is created right from the fondant.  Therefore, it is not in color at the stage as shown in the picture.
4.  If there is a curved-type of design marked on the fondant, the designed border (top and/or bottom sections) would be piped using the decorating tip desired.

In this side design, a puffed embroidery bottle was placed at the marking where the crease of the tape was in front of the cake.  Another bottle was  placed at each of the three other evenly spaced markings.  Another duck was place kitty corner to the duck.  Another bottle was placed kitty corner to the bear.  Therefore, the design is (beginning with the bottle in the front of the cake):  bottle, bear, bottle, duck, bottle, bear, bottle, duck.

Inbetween each of these main items a popup flower was created.  Inward, popup flower technique leaves were created above and below the flower.  An embroidery-style technique of a mini impression of a flower was placed inbetween each of these designs.

In this particular design, the main items are "a popup flower with leaves" and "an embroidery technique impression".

The adding machine tape was creased in half so that one of the main flowers (the flower with the leaves) was to be placed at the point of the heart and another at the back of the heart.  The tape was folded the number of time to make the desirable number of main flowers evently spaced around the cake.  The mini flower cutter (which you may purchase from me), was used to make the embroidery impression around the cake.
