Make a sheet cake. Stare at the sheet cake until you "see" the 2-piece outfit. Cut the cake lengthwise with a sharp knife at the place where you "see" the top of the panties. Now, stare at the panties and cut out the sections where legs would normally go making sure the curves for the openings are as even as possible. Now, stare at the top portion of the outfit which I will call the dress even though it is shorter than a regular baby's dress and cut out the neckline. Next, stare at the dress and cut out the dress to form its shape being sure the sleeves are as even as possible. Remove the cake scraps and use for cake-scraps desserts or just eat. Cover a board with florist foil. Cut out a piece of wax paper in the size and shape of the dress. Cut out a piece of wax paper in the size and shape of the panties. Place two dabs of frosting on the foil - one where the dress will be and one where the panties will be. Place a dab of frosting on the wax paper dress and put the cake dress on top. Press down on the cake dress to secure in place. Place a dab of frosting on the wax paper panties and put the cake panties on top. Press down on the cake panties to secure in place. (A clean board can be placed on top of the cake dress and then use the hands to press down on the board to secure the cake dress in place. The same thing can be done to the cake panties to secure them in place.) |

the Cake with Buttercream Frosting
Thin down some buttercream frosting and frosting the dress and panties cakes. Let dry to form a crust. Use regular-strength frosting and frost the cakes. Use tip #103 and make the ruffles at the neckline with the color frosting desired. Use tip #104 for the ruffles at the base of the dress and on the panties. For the panties, make the bottom ruffle first and then the top ruffle that will have its top section touch the top of the panties. (See sketch, above.) Use tip #102 for the ruffles at the leg openings. Use tip #101 for the ruffles at the bases of the sleeves. Use the proper-sized tips for the beads at the tops of each of the groups of ruffles. Use a toothpick and draw the rectangular shape as shown on the dress, above. Carefully, frost this area with a contrasting color with the rest of the dress. Cut out a piece of rice paper the shape and size of the rectangular shape and place on top of the colored frosting. Gently, press down to smooth the frosting underneath. Make a bead border around the rectangular shape. Place flowers on top to resemble buttons. (The flowers can be piped directly onto the rice paper or royal icing flowers can be glue to the rice paper with a dab of buttercream frosting.) |
| Covering
the Cake with Rolled Fondant & Decorating with Gumpaste
Cover the Cakes with buttercream. Cover the cakes with fondant. Place a textured fabric on top of the fondant and carefully either press down or roll a rolling pin over the fabric to give the fondant a textured look of material as well as a pattern from the textured fabric. Make sure the fabric is large enough so that you can also use your fingers and hands to gently, but firmly, continue to press down on the fondant over and around the curve of the cakes and down their sides. You might need to do additional triming at the bases of the cakes where the fondant meets the board. Make a border around the bottom of the dress of the panties to cover the sections where the fondant and the board meet. Decorate the cake with gumpaste ruffles and flowers. Use royal icing for the bead work. |
